Eco Friendly Shopping With The Tote Buddy – A San Diego Company

One thing we did religiously when living in Hong Kong, was bring our own reusable shopping bags everywhere we went. I kept them in the stroller basket since we didn’t have a car there. Here in La Jolla, I feel shielded from those kinds of stories a little bit so I was forgetting to bring my reusable bags to the grocery store half the time. Some grocery store employees use way too many plastic bags, though I know they are doing their best under rushed circumstances. I hate seeing the piles of plastic bags accumulate, though I do take them to VONS for recycling.

I use Envirosax (see LJM Shop) a lot, because I love that they roll up tightly and have cute patterns. They are NOT great for grocery shopping, however, if you are carting home bottles of olive oil, wine, etc. You need a bag with a supported flat bottom where bottles can stand upright rather than risk flopping over and breaking.

The Tote Buddy comes with 1 or 3 large reusable flat bottom bags, depending on which option you choose. You can fit A LOT in these reusable bags. The Tote Buddy organizes them into a slim, flat case that you can easily keep in your car or house. I have to keep it in the car 100% of the time, otherwise I’ll forget. I slide it between the front passenger seat and center console so that it’s barely noticeable. I also bought reusable wine bottle totes from Bevmo that I now keep in The Tote Buddy. Right after I unload the groceries, I put the bags back in The Tote Buddy and put the entire thing under my purse which always goes in the car with me. It’s auto pilot now.

The only “con” I can think of really is that it’s a little bit big or sometimes I’ll take out one bag for a small grocery trip, leave The Tote Buddy in the car and then forget to put the one bag back in. The latter is my fault and I don’t think the size should or will distract anyone from using it. Once I get to the last bag and it’s not enough for all the groceries I’ve purchased, I end up carrying the items in my purse or my arms and hoping nothing drops on my way back to the car. 53 jengd November 24, 2009 at 10:15 pm: I LOVE my reusable bags! We actually got canvas bags at Trader Joes about 3yrs ago and I’ve been addicted ever since. I now have a mish-mash of canvas bags, bags that are pretty much the size and shape of brown paper bags but I think are plastic-coated nylon, and a few of the cheaper once-plastic woven bags with plastic bottoms. Unfortunately, the last don’t hold up well. I always have a bag with me (doubles as a diaper/toy/snack bag) to catch small purchases and tend to leave a few in each of our cars for shopping trips.

After I carry everything upstairs and put it away I don’t feel like making a special trip to put them back in the car. I need something that I can attach to my purse or hang over the door knob next to my purse. Maybe that way I won’t forget.
