There are some places that I just haven’t been to in a while for no good reason. Wine Time is one of those places.
It was lunchtime and we had no food. I didn’t have a chance to get to the store before I had to pick La Jolla Girl up from preschool, so I ducked into Wine Time for sandwiches. I read on Yelp that people like the deli. I ordered La Jolla Dad a Charger sandwich and myself a Turkey Avocado. His was excellent actually (bacon, turkey, cheese on marbled rye bread) and mine was certainly better than I could do at home, though I think next time I’ll get one of their specialties. The price is reasonable for La Jolla. It would be very easy for you to pick up a sandwich on your way down to the beach.
Deli aside, the wine selection is impressive. I like the handwritten notes next to some of the bottles. Kay, the owner, must drink an absurd amount of wine. What a fantastic job. He puts his recommendation on some of these notes. I bought one of his recommendations that happened to also be on deep sale. It was excellent, and you’ll hear about it next week. 
We are drinking it as I type this.
There is a nice selection of very inexpensive, good wines as well as boutique, hard to find wines. At first glance, I’d say that the prices are fair. I could make a study of price, as some of the same wines are sold at BevMo, San Diego Wine Company or VONS. However, the reason why you’d shop at Wine Time is because you appreciate the heart and soul the owners have clearly poured into the business. It’s just a neat little place that’s been around a long time – you can pick up other convenience store necessities there. They have a nice selection of imported candy too.
If you’re in doubt, ask Kay what he’d recommend based on your specs. Word on the street is that he’s right on the money and almost always at the store.
